CECIL SHARP HOUSE, LONDON

IN 1992, Angel Morris − at the time a powerful, and for us as fledgling Holt Morris, a potent, inspirational, force in the great Morris pantheon − were celebrating their 20th Anniversary with a weekend of dance in London to which we were invited.

The Saturday dance-out culminated in an evening of musical celebration in the basement of the temple of folk-dance, Cecil Sharp House, in Regent’s Park. Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts (aka. Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs − No.1 “Seaside Shuffle”) led the groovers on the floor. In support, we in Holt Morris further contributed to the gravitas of the occasion and location, with possibly definitive versions of:

  • 3 Steps to Heaven
  • Oh Boy
  • The Young Ones
  • 8 Days a Week
  • Girl of my Best Friend

Cecil, gazing from above, is surely still pondering the dance notation of Patrick, Terry, Ray and Peter as I write. Spot the “Shadows Walk,” Cecil. What he makes of Jonathan Nibbs, up front, is open to question. The photos below are no help to him, Nibbs’s legs being cut off below the knee. These iconic versions of modern folk classics are still shocking and delighting audiences today.

See Andy Beck and Clive Sibley, on guitars, back left hand side.

Big thanks to Baggo for the photos.
